JACKSON/WACKER INTERSECTION TO REOPEN THURSDAY AFTERNOON

The new intersection of Jackson Boulevard and Wacker Drive will reopen on Thursday afternoon, as the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) works to complete the Wacker Drive reconstruction project by the end of the month. “The reopening of the Jackson intersection is an important milestone in this final stage of the project,” said CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein. “We expect to complete construction soon and open a modern, more efficient and safer Upper and Lower Wacker Drive.” At 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 15th, the newly reconstructed intersection of Jackson at Wacker will reopen for the first time since closing earlier …

Wacker Drive Reconstruction Project Enters Final Phase

The Jackson Boulevard intersection at Wacker Drive will close on Monday, June 18th as the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) opens the new Monroe Street intersection and begins the final phase of the $300 million Wacker reconstruction project. Revive Wacker Drive, Part 2, which will completely rebuild and modernize the 60-year-old roadway, remains on schedule to be completed by the end of 2012. The project is modernizing the upper and lower levels of Wacker Drive by creating safer, more efficient roadways for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. Wacker Construction Schedule Adjusted

The Revive Wacker Drive, Part 2, construction schedule has been adjusted to ensure the project is completed by the end of 2012 – on-time and on-budget. The midblock between Jackson and Van Buren will be closed as part of this adjustment. Both Jackson and Van Buren intersections will remain open until construction at Monroe and Adams is complete this summer. Check the Traffic Impacts page for more details.

Reconstruction of Monroe Street Intersection Is On-Schedule

More than 100 trucks delivered 1,000 cubic yards of concrete yesterday to north-south Wacker Drive to pour a deck for the Monroe Street intersection, which is expected to reopen this summer. The Wacker Drive reconstruction project remains on-schedule and on-budget. Check out ABC 7′s coverage of the concrete pour and overall project.

Wacker crews discover Cold War fallout supplies

Recently CDOT construction crews discovered a nuclear fallout storage area from the Cold War while working on Lower Wacker Drive. The storage area, built in 1962, contained several supplies to help survive radiation in the case of a nuclear attack. Supplies included medicine, barrels of water, a portable toilet and even some biscuits – which are still good today. Check out this video from ABC 7 Chicago for coverage of the historic find.
