Pedestrian Access Changes from Madison to Jackson

Madison to Monroe
Crews will be pouring Latex for the deck between Madison and Monroe tomorrow morning. As part of the pour, the temporary pedestrian crossing north of Monroe will be removed today at 7 p.m.

Pedestrians can cross at Madison and use the Wacker sidewalks south of Madison. Once the pour is completed, the deck will need to cure and pedestrian access will be restricted on Wacker between Madison and Monroe. East-West travel on Madison will be permitted, but no pedestrians will be allowed to travel south on Wacker on either of the sidewalks between Madison and Monroe.

This new alignment will be in effect tomorrow at 7 p.m. until Tuesday morning.

Adams to Jackson
Deck forming also continues further south in the project.

The temporary sidewalk between Adams and Jackson will be removed Friday at 7 p.m. Crews will remove the sidewalk through the night and begin forming the deck over the weekend. The pedestrian path will be restored Monday morning.

Wacker Construction Schedule Adjusted

The Revive Wacker Drive, Part 2, construction schedule has been adjusted to ensure the project is completed by the end of 2012 – on-time and on-budget.

The midblock between Jackson and Van Buren will be closed as part of this adjustment. Both Jackson and Van Buren intersections will remain open until construction at Monroe and Adams is complete this summer. Check the Traffic Impacts page for more details.

Wacker crews discover Cold War fallout supplies

Recently CDOT construction crews discovered a nuclear fallout storage area from the Cold War while working on Lower Wacker Drive.

The storage area, built in 1962, contained several supplies to help survive radiation in the case of a nuclear attack. Supplies included medicine, barrels of water, a portable toilet and even some biscuits – which are still good today.

Check out this video from ABC 7 Chicago for coverage of the historic find.
